The art of letting things go is the ability to recognize moments that could effect you, but you consciously choose to ignore or forgive little inconveniences in life. There are times where small burdens can effect you negatively, causing one moment to carry out longer than it needs to. This guide will show you the benefits of letting little things go and developing a stronger mindset against daily problems.
What It Means to Let Go
Letting go of situations is a way to consciously move on and surround yourself with more daily positive energy. Holding on to short term disruptions harbor negative energy that transfers to your mental and physical health. Your brain can only hold so much information at a time, so having something negative at the forefront of your thoughts prevents productive, positive thoughts from occupying that space. Letting go makes room for beneficial thoughts which will improve your quality of life overall.
When to Let Go : Severity
It is important to distinguish whether a problem needs to be addressed or shrugged off. The severity of a situation needs to be evaluated in order to react appropriately. There are some situations that must be addressed in order to move forward, while others are so meaningless in the bigger picture that they can be dismissed immediately. Small inconveniences are part of life. When working on yourself, the universe will test you every day with little challenges to prove your mental toughness. Losing motivation is common among people who allow the little things to effect them. Large scale issues typically need to be assessed and solved before moving on completely from them, so recognizing severity is the first step in letting go.
Response
The key to letting things go is to develop a strong mindset and control how you respond to stimuli. In life, you can only control a small amount of what happens in the world around you. We are small beings in a vast universe. Assessing whether a situation is out of your control has a large impact on how you respond. When you manage your response method, you’re able to view a situation more clearly and react in your best interest.
Problem Solving
When you recognize a more severe problem, there is a solution that must be met in order to overcome and move on from it. Issues that cannot be ignored require a solution, which identifies itself as a roadblock toward your end goal. Overcoming a roadblock leads to a breakthrough, which is necessary on the path to your objective. Problem solving consists of three steps: identify, analyze, and implement.
1. Identify
Identify the problem by viewing from an outside perspective. Without personal opinions and bias, you’re able to get to the root of the issue easier.
2. Analyze
Analyze the severity of the problem and what initially caused the issue. Finding the root cause makes finding a solution simpler. Generate ideas on how this problem could be solved.
3. Implement
After generating ideas, narrow down which solution would work the best for the issue at hand. Implement the solution and trust that you handled the situation to the best of your ability.
Self Sabotage
There are times where we create problems or dwell on situations which restrict our ability to move forward toward a goal. This can happen for various reasons. Self sabotage can be conscious or unconscious. Sabotaging your progress toward accomplishments is a common occurrence and can be restructured to your benefit. Letting Go Process
The process of letting things go on a daily basis is designed for small inconveniences that are meaningless enough to shrug off. Spending time thinking and analyzing these inconveniences wastes brain capacity and valuable time that is better used focusing on yourself. These steps are a quick way to assess little issues and move on from them before they have time to take up space in your mind.
Recognize
Recognize the issue at hand. Is this issue affecting your progress toward your higher self? Is it out of your control? Analyze the severity of the situation and whether it is meaningful to your personal progress. If it is affecting your path, take problem solving steps to handle the situation. A minor inconvenience or argument is not worth spending time thinking about. If it is out of your control, there is simply nothing you can do to change it.
Accept
Accept there is nothing you can do to change the situation. The only thing you can control is how you react to the situation, and how you let it affect you. Accepting situations for what they are allows you to move on from minor issues easier. Avoid emotional reactions and reject negative energy. If the situation is not serving you positively, transfer your focus to things you believe are more important.
Build
Build self confidence through choosing yourself. The more you consciously let little things go, the more space you have in your life for positive self talk, and things will be less likely to bother you. The shift of your focus from little issues to your own success will build your confidence over time. Click here to learn how to get out of your comfort zone and build confidence.
Move On
Move Forward with a clean slate. Once you have identified this problem as a meaningless inconvenience that you do not have space for, let it go completely. You know that this inconvenience is nothing but a test. Do not carry this any further. Do not waste your energy thinking about this any longer. Move forward. Let it go.
Psychological Benefits
Letting things go is proven to have various health benefits. Allowing little things to bother you will build up stress over time. Holding onto stress affects your mind and body. Excess tension can increase blood pressure which affects your heart. Letting things go will release the stress from your body, finally removing the “weight on your shoulders”. It has also been proven that your sleep will improve the more you let things go.
Leave the Past in the Past
As humans, we are constantly growing and changing. There are likely a lot of things your past self may have done or said that you wouldn’t today. This is because you learn from mistakes and grow constantly. It is important to leave the past in the past because time travel does not exist (that I know of). There is no possible way to go back in time and change the past. And if you could, changing one thing back then would result in a completely different you today. Everything happens for a reason, and learning is part of life. Accept the past and leave it there. Move forward because that is simply the only way you can move without staying in the exact place you are right now.
Trust the Process
Change will not happen all at once. It is difficult let things go, and this post will not immediately change your mindset. This strategy will not always be the answer. Success is not linear, and nothing is perfect in life. The most important way to grow as a person is continue practicing. The more you practice steps toward a better version of yourself, the closer you will get to your end goals. Trust that everyone is on their own unique path and success looks different for everyone. Trust the process. Focus inward. Let things go.
