A lighter is a tool that every hiker or camper should carry. It provides an easy, reliable flame so long as it is full and dry. This DIY paracord lighter wrap keychain allows you to connect your lighter to a backpack or key ring for easy access whenever you need it.
What You’ll Need
- parachute cord
- scissors
- 2 lighters (one for sealing ends)
- key ring
Parachute Cord – Parachute cord or “paracord” is sold at most craft and sporting goods stores. If you can’t find paracord in store, you can purchase it here.
Scissors – Any household scissors will work for this project. Scissors are required to cut the paracord to the desired length.
Lighters – Flame seals off the ends of the paracord after it is cut to length to prevent fraying. You’ll need one lighter to wrap, and another to seal the frayed ends.
Key Ring – Any key ring or carabiner clip will work for this project.
Paracord Lighter Wrap Keychain Tutorial
Start by creating a scaffold knot to attach the paracord to the key ring.
Step 1: Loop the paracord through the key ring, creating about 5 to 6 inches of slack.
Step 2: Wrap the shorter end twice around the long end, wrapping away from you. This should create an “x” shape.
Step 3: With the short end, thread under the “x” and pull to create your scaffold knot.
Step 4: Adjust to fit snugly to the key ring.
The following steps show how to create the lighter wrap.
Step 1: Lay the long end of the paracord on top of the lighter. Fold at the end of the lighter and lay parallel, as shown in picture 1.
Step 2: Begin to wrap the long end around the lighter. Wrap as tightly as possible to ensure your lighter is secure. Continue until you reach the top of the lighter.
Step 3: There should now be a loop at the top of your lighter. Thread the end of your paracord through this loop.
Step 4: Pull the key ring to close the top loop, securing your wrap in place.
If desired, adjust the scaffold knot to your liking. Cut loose ends. Hold a flame to the frayed ends to secure.
