How to Choose Hiking Boots
Remember, all feet are different. A boot that works best for me may not be the best for you.
1. Durability
How do you plan to use your boots? A day hiking boot is much different than a boot designed for multi-day backpacking. Heavy duty boots are made to last longer, and carry you further than the average hiking boot.
Low top hiking shoes are the first tier of durability. This design looks similar to a sneaker but with more enforcements. Although there is little to no ankle support, hiking shoes have elevated arch support and anti-slip outsoles. These models are usually lightweight and perfect for trail running.
Mid weight hiking boots are the next level of footwear, which provide arch support, anti-slip tread, and ankle support. This style is my personal choice because it provides all levels of support and tread without being restrictive. This style is perfect for mid range hikes.
Heavyweight hiking boots are best for long backpacking trips in all climates. This style features high top ankle support to withstand any amount of weight you carry on your back. Heavyweight boots also have the highest amount of arch support to handle long distances.
Adding insoles is another great option to make your hiking boots last longer.
2. Try On
The best way to know if a pair of hiking boots fits well is by trying them on. Testing boots in-store is the easiest way to do this. However, hiking stores can be sparse in some regions and finding a specific model can be hard. If you order your boots online, order from a website that provides cheap and easy returns in case they don’t work out. Try on your boots with a pair of hiking socks, and walk around a bit to feel the support and/or any problem areas.
3. Waterproofing
A waterproof pair of boots is almost always the best option. If you are specifically hiking in wet climates where you’ll be in and out of water in your boots, a breathable fast drying pair may be a better option. Otherwise, waterproof boots are recommended. If you find a perfect pair of boots that are not waterproof, or notice your boots are losing their seal, opt to use waterproofing spray to keep your feet dry.
4. Size and Fit
Your boots should not fit too loose or too tight. Save room for a thick pair of socks, and let your feet breathe a little. Remember, as you hike throughout the day, your feet may swell due to increased blood flow and/or heat. Keep this in mind when sizing your hiking boots.
Every hiking boot is different, so try out a half size up or down to feel which fits best.
5. Traction
You want to choose a pair of boots with as much grip as possible, to reduce the risk of slipping or falling on the trail. Typically, a smaller pattern on the outsole of your shoe means it has more traction. However, the best way to test your boot traction is to scuff your feet around and feel how they stick to the ground. Try stepping on a slippery surface to test your boot grip.
