Camping Clothes Basics

Layers

Layering your outfits allows you to adjust as the temperature fluctuates throughout the day. Depending on the weather, heavy or light layers are essential. Temperatures rise in the middle of the day, and drop when the sun goes down. Adding or removing a layer of clothing is the easiest way to stay comfortable throughout any camping trip.

Fabrics

The type of material your clothes are made with can make a big difference when camping. Choosing a moisture wicking, odor reducing, breathable fabric will keep you fresh throughout your camping trip. Flexible fabrics including nylon, polyester, merino wool, and down are great options for any outdoor adventure. Avoid cotton fabric as it tends to absorb moisture and smells, and does not provide much UV protection.

Accessories

Don’t forget to accessorize! Accessories included in this guide are worn for function, not fashion. Always protect your skin from harmful UV rays by wearing hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen.

Bugs

Protecting yourself from insect bites is a very important step when getting dressed for a camping trip. Wearing light clothing that covers your skin can prevent insect bites, along with bug repellent spray. Permethrin insect repellent can be used to spray tents, gear, and clothing for extra protection.
