With over 500,000 acres of land, the Allegheny National Forest is a perfect getaway. This region is located about 2 hours from Pittsburgh. There are plenty of things to do in the area, from hiking and kayaking to historic landmarks. If you travel to this destination, check out the Kinzua Dam and Skywalk.
Ricketts Glen State Park
North of Philadelphia is Ricketts Glen state park. This region contains over 10,000 acres with beautiful landscapes throughout. This park is perfect for fishing, hiking, and camping. With over 20 unique waterfalls, this is one of the best east coast travel destinations.
Maine
Acadia National Park
Acadia National Park is one of the best east coast travel destinations. 47,000 acres make up this park with various hiking, swimming, and stargazing opportunities. This park is known for its amazing wildlife including bear, moose, and birds.

If you’re looking for a coastal vacation, Bar Harbor is the destination for you. This town sees many tourists during the summer, and for good reason. This location sits adjacent to Acadia National Park and Frenchman bay. Early fall is a great season if you’d rather visit Bar Harbor at a quieter time of year. Trying the famous lobster roll is a must-do!
Vermont/New Hampshire
Groton State Forest
Groton State Forest contains over 26,000 acres of land with plenty of opportunities to camp, hike, fish, and more. There are 7 state parks within this forest in Vermont. This region is home to unique protected wildlife that does not inhabit any other areas. This is also a great destination for kayaking.
White Mountain National Forest
Neighboring Groton State Forest is White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire. The Appalachian trail runs through this area, with plenty of activities for nature lovers. New Hampshire is also home to Mount Washington, the highest peak in the northeast United States.
New York
Adirondack Mountains
My most frequent east coast travel destination is the Adirondack Mountains. This mountain range covers over 5,000 miles with plenty of hiking, camping, and other outdoor activities. The Adirondack Region contains over 1,000 named peaks with beautiful scenic waterfalls and views carved out by glaciers. There are 46 high peaks including Mount Marcy, the highest point in New York State.
Catskill Mountains
The Catskill Mountains are a unique natural region in New York spanning over 700,000 acres. Located about 2 hours north of New York City, this destination is sure to cure your cabin fever. The Catskills are popular for hiking, sightseeing, and biking. If you visit this east coast travel spot, the Rail Explorers railroad bike in Phoenicia is a must!
North Carolina
Pisgah National Forest
With over 500,000 acres of land, Pisgah National Forest is among the best east coast travel destinations. Part of the Appalachian trail resides in this region as well. Filled with waterfalls, hiking trails, caves, and more, you’ll be sure to find something to do at this destination. The Linville Caverns are a must, located inside of humpback mountain.
Great Smoky Mountains
The Great Smoky Mountains is a famous region in North Carolina. There is plenty of history to explore as well as beautiful landscapes throughout. This area has over 100 waterfall destinations and hiking opportunities. Over 90 preserved historic buildings reside in the Great Smoky Mountains, dating back to the 1800s.
Georgia
Tallulah Gorge State Park
Tallulah Gorge State Park surrounds a beautiful canyon in Georgia formed by the Tallulah River. This canyon reaches about 1,000 feet deep, revealing panoramic views from all sides. With plenty of hiking trails and attractions, this state park is a perfect east coast travel destination. Interesting historic sites round out this destination as an ideal vacation. If possible, visit the Interpretive Center early to receive a limited permit to hike the gorge floor trail and visit the sliding rock!
Blue Ridge
If you’re looking for a more low-key travel destination, Blue Ridge Georgia is the place. In this town, there are plenty of spots to kayak, swim, and hike. This location features unique breweries and wineries, as well as a scenic railroad. If you visit this destination, take a train ride to observe the beautiful scenery along the Toccoa river.
Florida
Ocala National Forest
Ocala National Forest spans over 600 miles, located just north of Orlando. This destination is famous for its natural springs and wildlife. Snorkeling, fishing, and swimming is irresistible here. If you’re looking for a more tropical style vacation, this reserve is the spot for you.
Ichetucknee Springs State Park
Located between Jacksonville and Tallahassee, Ichetucknee Springs is a perfect destination if you love the water. This region contains abundant wildlife and natural springs. This location is popular for tubing and rafting, and features a 400 foot blue swimming hole for diving. Scuba diving in the blue hole presents up-close observation of turtles and fish.
